LouEllen Speer Named Union Hospital District’s Healthcare Worker of the Year During the Union Hospital District’s annual Employee Appreciation Banquet held on May 15, the district named LouEllen Speer as its Healthcare Worker of the Year.
“I am honored to be named Healthcare Worker of the Year,” said Speer, the Executive Assistant to the CEO and CFO of the Union Hospital District. “I love to help people and try to do the best job I can every day.”
A native of Spartanburg, Speer has been employed by Wallace Thomson Hospital for nine years, and has served as Executive Assistant since 2005. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Management with Summa Cum Laude honors from Limestone College in Gaffney, as well as an Associate of Arts degree in Music/Video Production and Business Management from the Art Institute of Atlanta. Speer is currently working with the Miller Arts Council in Colquitt, GA as costume designer for the “Swamp Gravy Songbook,” and is actively involved in cat and small animal rescue. She enjoys spending her spare time with her husband Robert and children, and working in their yard and garden. Two of Speer’s children, Alex and Ashley, are youth volunteers at Wallace Thomson Hospital, and Alex was recently named Volunteer of the Quarter.
Speer was selected as Healthcare Worker of the Year from a pool of 12 employees who were each selected as Employee of the Month between June 2006 and May 2007. Speer was named Employee of the Month last July. The 11 other employees who received the monthly award were honored during the ceremony and include: Vonda Morris, Environmental Services; Bob Laubinger, Information Systems; Vanessa Quinn, Med/Surg; Lourie Moorman, Patient Access; Becky Burton, Surgical Services; Brooke Prince, Grants Coordinator; Mary Palmer, Pharmacy; Sharon Stevens, Medical Staff Coordinator; Ologiwan Smith, Environmental Services; Debra Robertson, Radiology; and Robert Brooking, Information Systems.
Speer received a savings bond and a gift certificate to Wal-Mart. Her picture will be displayed next to a plaque in appreciation of her dedication to continuous quality improvement at Wallace Thomson Hospital.
In addition to Speer’s award, 35 employees were honored during the banquet for their years of dedication in five-year intervals, which included 17 employees celebrating five years, 12 employees celebrating 10 years, three employees celebrating 15 years, one employee celebrating 20 years, one employee celebrating 25 years, and one employee celebrating 30 years of service to the Union Hospital District.
The annual awards banquet was held following National Healthcare Workers Week, which is designated to salute employees for their dedication to providing quality healthcare to our community and to inform the public about the hard work these outstanding men and women provide daily. During the week, the Union Hospital District also provided cholesterol and glucose screenings for employees and volunteers, served its employees a steak dinner, and hosted an ice cream social, a popcorn party, and a benefits fair.
The Union Hospital District is comprised of Wallace Thomson Hospital, Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, and Union County EMS, and employs 500 men and women from the community in a variety of roles.
